SRC cancels teachers' contract
Philly.com - “In a stunning move that could reshape the face of city schools, the Philadelphia School Reform Commission voted Monday to unilaterally cancel its teachers’ contract.”
It is unclear if the School “Reform” Commission actually has the power to cancel union contracts as written in Act 46, the takeover law that privatized the school district’s governance by replacing the Philadelphia School Board with the SRC in 2001.
The SRC cannot be abolished unless its five Commissioners vote themselves out of office. The option of putting the dissolution of the SRC before voters on this November’s ballot was rejected by the Philadelphia City Council earlier this September.
