Below is a response by former APWU President William Burrus to a question posed online by a union member. Other questions cover a wide range of topics, from contract enforcement to union governance.
Question:
Why can’t the employees covered by FERS (Federal Employees Retirement System) get a nice percentage of their unused sick leave back when they retire? A lot of us do not use very much and would like to get something back for not abusing it.

President Burrus:
We often receive questions about paying FERS employees for unused sick leave upon their retirement. The CSRS and FERS retirement systems are governed by federal legislation and can only be changed through acts of Congress.
Employees who have an interest in this issue should communicate their concerns with their legislators. COPA, the union’s Committee on Political Action, is the APWU vehicle for supporting those elected officials who support APWU goals, so I would expect that employees who are concerned about this issue would be among its contributors.
