Below is a response by former APWU President William Burrus to a question posed online by a union member. Other questions cover a wide range of topics, from contract enforcement to union governance.
Question:
Most often the real intent of the language and the proposals get lost in translation. We, for the most part, understand the National Agreement. However, would it be possible to develop a set of Questions and Answers to go along with the new changes? Could it be posted on the Web site?
Jason, North Alabama Area Local
President Burrus:
Thank you for writing. I am informed that many members have been speculating about how the provisions of the tentative contract will be applied. There are many details about the all-full-time regular workforce in the large offices, the upgrades, and other issues, which are not specifically addressed by the tentative agreement.
I have assigned Executive Vice President Cliff Guffey and Clerk Craft Director Jim McCarthy to compile the outstanding questions and engage in discussions with postal officials at the national level to create a question and answer document that will reflect our agreement and resolve the unanswered questions. Once it has been completed, the Q & A will be turned into a pamphlet, posted on the union’s Web site, and circulated among APWU activists and members.
