Leadership Training for APWU Presidents

Program

The training is designed to assist APWU presidents in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to run an effective union and to meet the upcoming struggles and challenges of the future. This training is offered only to APWU local and state presidents.

This training was last offered in April 2007. Stay tuned to these pages for an anouncement of the next Leadership Training for APWU Presidents conference.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes:

Understanding Leadership: Explores ways to build a team to work effectively with others to achieve a common goal.

Defining an Effective Union: Discusses the advantage of utilizing committees and the importance of goal setting in the development and maintainance of the union.

Building the Union: Identifies workplace issues and assists in developing an internal communication structure.

Leading Volunteers/Mobilizing Members: Examines the elements of a system for effectively recruiting, training, rewarding and leading union activist.

Effective Problem Solving and Decision Making: Includes brainstorming, problem solving, group dynamics and consensus decision making.

Coalition Building: Identifies coalition partners and explores the conditions for maintaining an effective relationship to collaborate on joint projects of action.

Getting Out the Union's Message: Discusses writing flyers and newsletters, editing layout, media strategies , effective press releases, and working with the press.

Communicating One-on-One: Develops participant's ability to listen attentively, give and receive feedback, deal with emotions and communicate effectively with the members and management.

Managing Conflict: Examines the nature, causes of conflict, and explores alternative approaches to conflict resolution.

Conducting Effective Meetings: Discusses meeting preparation, effective follow though, and managing meeting dynamics.

Understanding Ourselves and Others: Enables participants to understand individual differences in information gathering and decision-making, and their impact on team work within the union.

Leading a Diverse Union: Increases awareness and understanding of diversity, and develops policies and actions to insure that all members are treated with respect.

Time Management: Provides participants with a variety of time management tools, including setting goals and priorities, managing paper work, and eliminating time wasters.

Making Effective Presentations: Develops participants' ability to make presentations at union meetings, before management and at community meetings.

Stress Management: Examines the causes, the health consequences, and strategies for managing or eliminating stress.
