Contract Extensions for OS and IS/ASC Workers

(Excerpt from the March/April 2003 issue of The American Postal Worker magazine)

Editor's note: Per the proposed dates detailed below, the APWU Operating Services and Information Systems / Accounting Service Center workers ratified their contract extensions in July 2003.

In early January, APWU President William Burrus continued talks with the Postal Service about extending the Operating Services and Information Systems/Accounting Service Center workers' bargaining agreements an additional year. The APWU proposal is to extend the current four-year OS agreement to Nov. 20, 2005, and the current four-year IS/ASC agreement to Jan. 20, 2006.

President Burrus entered into the contract talks at the request of Support Services Division members to ensure the OS and IS/ASC Agreements continue to pattern after the National Agreement. On Jan. 2, the President Burrus conducted a teleconference with IS/ASC locals regarding the terms of a tentative extension; the locals participating in the conference expressed a consensus to conduct a ratification vote.

Similarly, the Nation's Capital-Southern Maryland Area Local and Northern Virginia Area Local, which represent members at the national OS headquarters and the USPS Facility Services in Merrifield, VA, just outside Washington, expressed their support and agreed to conduct a ratification vote on the extended OS agreement.
