Local post office employees plan to picket today to protest the possible closure of a Columbus mail processing center as part of a United States Postal Service plan to consolidate several area mail processing centers nationwide.
As part of a nationwide day of union picketing, postal service union workers and other supporters will hand out informational leaflets today in front of the Milgen Road post office, Columbus' mail processing center, said Clive Cannon, an electronic technician at the Milgen Road location and the Georgia maintenance craft director for the American Postal Workers Union's local branch.
In July, USPS compiled a list of 139 mail processing centers nationwide being considered for closure and consolidation to other locations.
Centers in Columbus and Albany appeared on the list, with possible consolidation to the mail processing center in Macon.
Several calls to the Milgen Road post office after 5 p.m. went unanswered Wednesday.
Cannon said if the Milgen Road office closes, jobs will be transferred to Macon and customers will experience delays in mail.
