Potential Post Office Shutdown Could Mean Mail Delays
By KATHERINE AMENTA -- WMDT 10/26/2006

It could take up to three extra days to receive bills and birthday cards. That's what postal workers on the Eastern Shore are saying. They were taking part Thursday in a nationwide protest of the possible shutdown of 139 mail processing sections across the county.

Protestors say the move would drastically alter how and when mail is collected.

"It would actually mean the collection would happen a little bit earlier during the day, the final collection for the day and mail would go all the way to Baltimore to come back to the shore so mail that was leaving the shore would come back to the shore would be delayed a day or two or even three," said APWU President Steve Adams.

The closure at Salisbury's Route 50 office would not shut down the post office, just its processing section.

If the closure does happen, protestors say it may take as many as five or six years before the shutdown takes affect.
