American Postal Workers Union members at more than 100 locals took part in a nationwide day of picketing Oct. 26 to protest U.S. Postal Service plans to consolidate scores of facilities.

The picketing was part of APWU’s ongoing campaign to tell the public that the consolidation plans are detrimental to Americans and small business, said APWU spokeswoman Sally Davidow.

At a rally in Baltimore, APWU President William Burrus said the Postal Service’s plans could be thwarted by galvanizing community support and by securing the support of members of Congress.

“The Postal Service has failed to consider the concerns of the American people, denied them the information necessary to determine if the revised network will meet their needs, and excluded them from having real input in the decision-making process,” Burrus said.

The Postal Service has said it has not drawn up an entire consolidation plan for realigning its distribution and processing network, an omission the Government Accountability Office has criticized. Postal officials also have said the plan will reduce costs by $1 billion over each of the next several years.
