COPA Launches New Program
(This article was first published in the January/February 2012 issue of The American Postal Worker magazine.)
Elections have consequences. Currently, many in Congress are ready to dismantle the Postal Service: They are threatening to lay-off over 100,000 USPS employees, close post offices and processing facilities, and break our contract.
What can you do? Fight back! Fight back by helping elect legislators who will stand with us. Make sure you stay informed, involved, volunteer, vote — and make a committed contribution to COPA, the union’s Committee on Political Action. We can’t do it without you.
COPA has established new incentives. The Trip of a Lifetime contest is designed to encourage ongoing contributions. Individuals, locals and retiree chapters are eligible to win.
All individuals who reach a COPA Club level will be entered in The Trip of a Lifetime Contest.
The three COPA Club levels are the Eagle Club ($100 per year), Capitol Club ($250 per year), and President’s Club ($500 per year). Eligibility is based on total contributions made between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012.
States contributing the most toward their nationally established COPA goals will receive preferential seating at the National Convention. Calculations will be based on donations made from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2012.

With the support of tens of thousands of APWU members, COPA raised more than $2.5 million during the 2007-2008 election cycle.

What's at Stake?
Well-funded mailing industry interests continue to demand below-cost postage discounts that rob the Postal Service of the revenue it needs. In the wake of the postal "reform" legislation passed in 2006, the mailing industry and its pro-privatization allies in Congress will continue to press the same anti-worker agenda adopted by the President's Commission on the Postal Service.
