COLA Raise Presents An Opportunity, Union President Says

APWU Web News Article #43-05, Sept. 14, 2005

(09/14/05) The cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) raise that will appear in the paychecks of APWU-represented employees Sept. 23 exemplifies the value of the union contract, President William Burrus said in a letter to local and state presidents this week. Union leaders should seize the opportunity to sign-up non-members and to urge APWU members to contribute to the union’s political action fund, he said.

The national APWU is mailing approximately 60,000 personalized letters to non-members, highlighting the raise and asking them to join. The union is also sending a mailing to all active-duty and retired members, seeking contributions to COPA, the union’s Committee on Political Action.

“Increasing our COPA fund and signing up new union members are crucial tasks for leaders at all levels of our organization,” Burrus wrote to local and state officers. “I hope you will take the opportunity to follow up on these mailings by mobilizing activists in your local and state organization to sign up new COPA contributors and to encourage non-members to join.”
