Emergency Preparedness Plan

Burrus Update #5-02, March 13, 2002

In cooperation with the postal unions and management associations, the Postal Service has completed its Emergency Preparedness Plan for protecting postal employees and postal customers from exposure to biohazardous material and for ensuring mail security against bioterror attacks. An executive summary of the plan may be accessed from the APWU web site.

The plan recognizes the limitations of current medical and scientific knowledge as well as the availability of existing technology, but it represents a positive step in protecting the safety and health of postal employees and our customers.

The plan also reflects a commitment to re-opening the Brentwood and Trenton facilities. The current delay is caused by the contractor's insistence that the Postal Service indemnify them from future legal action, which the Postal Service refuses to do as a matter of policy.
