Pipe-Bomb Suspect Apprehended
Burrus Update #11-02, May 8, 2002
As you have probably heard, a suspect in the pipe-bombing incidents was taken into custody and charged yesterday, May 7, 2002.
Throughout this incident, postal employees demonstrated bravery and dedication to serving the American people. Once again, postal employees continued to process and deliver the nation's mail, in spite of frightening and difficult circumstances. The entire nation salutes your efforts, and I do as well.
Management and the unions worked together to provide employees with up-to-date information throughout this crisis. Postmaster General John E. Potter notified the APWU of the incidents in Iowa and Illinois on Friday, May 3, and a meeting of top management and union officials was held that evening. Morning and evening teleconferences were conducted over the weekend and teleconferences continued on Monday and Tuesday. The Mail Security Task Force met on Tuesday as well.
We are informed that postal management from the affected areas provided detailed updates at each meeting and teleconference, and the Postal Inspection Service provided updates on the criminal investigation. There was an open exchange of ideas and information on each occasion.
The success of this process demonstrates the value of working together toward a common cause.
We encourage you to continue to be vigilant as you perform your duties.
William Burrus
President
