Presidential Commission Adopts
Recommendations of Two Subcommittees

Burrus Update 15-03, July 16, 2003

The Presidential Commission on the U.S. Postal Service adopted the recommendations of two of its subcommittees today, along with recommendations from its co-chairmen.

When the commission was established last December, the American Postal Workers Union predicted that the recommendations would be adverse to the interests of postal workers and the American public. These most recent actions have validated our concerns.

The commission will meet again on July 23, when it will vote on the recommendations of the Workforce and the Technology Challenges subcommittees. The full panel's final report will follow before the end of the month.

The APWU will reserve final judgment and analysis of the commission's work until we have had the opportunity to review the entire document.

(The text of today's adopted recommendations from the Business Model and the Private-Sector Partnership subcommittees, as well as those from the co-chairmen, can be found on the commission's Web site at www.treas.gov/offices/domestic-finance/usps, via the "Final Report and Recommendations" link.)
