L.A. Union Says APWU Presence
Will Be Viewed as Supportive
Burrus Update #13-2004, Aug. 5, 2004
As reported in Update #12, I have received written assurance from hotel management in Los Angeles that the convention-area hotel workers will not be locked out during the APWU convention Aug. 23-27. I have also been in close contact with the local and national presidents of the Hotel & Restaurant Employees union (HERE) in order to determine whether our stay at the hotels is consistent with their strategy to achieve a fair contract.
The HERE presidents say that the union and the employees are extremely pleased that the APWU convention is on schedule and view our presence as supportive of their contract demands. The union has requested that APWU delegates come to Los Angeles as planned and fulfill their reservations at the hotels involved in negotiations.
HERE Local 11 members will speak to the APWU convention on Monday, Aug. 23, to express their appreciation. We will further show our support by engaging in picketing on behalf of the workers on Tuesday, Aug. 24.
