What Will You Do?

Burrus Update #21-06, Dec. 22, 2006

I have an elementary question to pose to all APWU-represented employees — members and non-members alike — who tend to complain that the union has failed to achieve one or more objectives.

The question is:

What will you do to receive:

  1. An upgrade in status and pay;
  2. Conversion of PTFs in large offices to full time;
  3. The right to work overtime before casuals;
  4. Consecutive days off;
  5. Ten pay increases over the next four years, equaling a raise of approximately $4,500;
  6. The full benefit of the upgrade and pay increases even if you are assigned to a lower-level duty assignment (and are in a “saved grade” status);
  7. Protection against layoffs;
  8. Guaranteed bereavement leave;
  9. Leave opportunities and other contractual rights — even if you work in a small office without a local union; and
  10. The option of the Postal Service paying 95 percent of your healthcare premium.

All of these benefits have been negotiated on your behalf; but to receive them, you have to do something. You have to vote.

Is it too much to ask that you take one minute of your time, mark an “X” on a piece of paper, take it to work, and mail it?

The union has done its job, now it’s your turn.

What will you do?
