Support Wildfire Victims by Contributing to PERF
Burrus Update #17-2007, Oct. 25, 2007
![]() |
The California wildfires have caused tremendous damage and affected millions of citizens, including postal employees. To date, we have not received reports of personal losses by USPS employees, but postal workers who have been affected will be eligible for assistance from the Postal Employees Relief Fund.
APWU locals and union members who want to express solidarity are asked to contribute generously to the Postal Employees Relief Fund. To make a donation, visit PERF’s Web site, www.postalrelief.com, or make a contribution to the Combined Federal Campaign and designate PERF (CFC# 10268) as the agency to receive your contribution.
The Postal Service reports that 23 post offices have been closed, with delivery and pick-up for those locations transferred to other offices. Many employees have been unable to report to work and have been placed on Administrative Leave for the immediate period of the disaster.
On another matter, a fraudulent letter has been circulated among postal employees announcing that early retirement offers and “buyouts” will be made in 2008. No discussions are underway with postal management on early outs and/or incentives, and postal management has refuted the false information.
On several previous occasions, the Postal Service has made early-retirements offers in specific locations without engaging in the required negotiations with the union. Appropriate grievances and NLRB complaints are pending.
