The leader of an international union federation met with APWU President William Burrus on June 25, 2007, as part of a visit to the United States.

Philip Jennings, general-secretary of the Switzerland-based Union Network International (UNI), and Burrus discussed how the labor movement should respond to globalization, the trend by corporations and businesses to expand around the globe.

Public Affairs Group Honors APWU TV Ad

06/25/2007 - An APWU-sponsored TV commercial that decried the negative effects of Postal Service consolidation plans has won a “Pollie Award” from the American Association of Political Consultants.

Broadcast in select cities in the last half of 2006, the 30-second TV commercial — running in conjunction with radio ads — informed citizens and community leaders about the Postal Service’s network realignment proposals.

Ballot Placement Set, Candidates Certified for Election of APWU National Officers

06/22/2007 - Secretary-Treasurer Terry Stapleton has certified the following union members as candidates for election to national office by referendum balloting, as mandated by the APWU Constitution and Bylaws.

A drawing to determine the order candidates’ names will appear on the ballot was held on Friday, June 22, 2007, at 10 a.m. Incumbent officers are listed first, and are denoted by (I) appearing after their name.

Secretary-Treasurer Stapleton cast one vote for the candidates in the uncontested races and the National Election Committee declared them elected, in accordance with the Constitution. Their names will not appear on the ballot.

2006-2010 Contract Available

06/21/2007 - The official 2006-2010 Collective Bargaining Agreement between the USPS and the APWU is being printed and will be ready for shipping shortly, the union has announced. Copies can be viewed and downloaded from the APWU Web site, and orders for printed copies may be placed online or by phone.

Unions Rally for Employee Free Choice Act

06/20/2007 - APWU officers, staff and members from as far away as Richmond and Philadelphia joined thousands of union activists at a rally June 19 on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol to demand enactment of the Employee Free Choice Act — legislation that would ensure that working people can freely choose whether to form unions to negotiate for better wages and benefits.

NBA Percy Harrison Dies

06/19/2007 - Percy Harrison Jr., a Central Region National Business Agent since the early 1990s, died suddenly June 18. “We were shocked and saddened to learn of Percy’s passing,” said APWU President William Burrus. “Percy was an outspoken advocate for postal workers, and he will be sorely missed. Please keep his wife and family in your thoughts.”

Senate Set to Consider Employee Free Choice Act

06/19/2007 - The U.S. Senate is expected to debate legislation this week that would remove many of the obstacles faced by American workers who want to form unions.

The Employee Free Choice Act would give American workers greater freedom to make their own choices about joining unions and bargaining for better wages, benefits, and working conditions. The bill (S. 1041) would stiffen penalties for harassment, intimidation, and other illegal tactics employers often use to prevent workers from unionizing.

Local, State Presidents Urged To Promote APWU Health Plan

06/12/2007 - Local and state presidents are being asked to help spread the word about an important gain in the 2006-2010 Collective Bargaining Agreement: the increase in the Postal Service’s contribution to health insurance premiums for those who enroll in the APWU Consumer Driven Plan.

“Healthcare coverage is one of the most important benefits a union can negotiate for its members, and the APWU Health Plans are among the best in the Federal Employee Health Benefit Program (FEHBP),” President William Burrus wrote in a letter to APWU local and state presidents. “Yet, for a variety of reasons, many APWU members are enrolled in other health insurance plans.”

Zanesville Consolidation Study Terminated

06/12/2007 - The APWU has been notified that a proposed consolidation that would have resulted in a mail-processing shift approximately 60 miles across central Ohio will not occur.

“After review, it has been determined that there are currently no significant opportunities to improve efficiency and/or service through consolidation of certain mail processing operations at the Zanesville OH Post Office into the Columbus, OH Processing and Distribution Center,” the Postal Service wrote to the APWU on June 7.
