Attention: All Candidates and Members

National Officer
Election Information

WITHDRAWAL BY CANDIDATE

ELECTION COMMITTEE RULE: Any nominated candidate who decides to withdraw his/her name from the ballot must do so by so notifying the Secretary-Treasurer by Express Mail, Certified Mail or fax at 202-842-8530, addressed to and received in the office of the Secretary-Treasurer, American Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO, 1300 L Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005, no later than 4:00 pm on Tuesday, June 26, 2001.

Ballot Placement

ELECTION COMMITTEE RULE: For contested positions, the placement of names on the ballot will follow the past practice of having the incumbent's name at the top of the list of candidates for that position. Where there are two or more candidates for the same position, or two or more candidates for the Retiree National Convention Delegate for the same region, who are not incumbents, the determination of the order of their names on the ballot will be made by a drawing. The drawing will take place at APWU national headquarters at 10:00 am on Friday, June 29, 2001. A candidate may attend at his/her own expense or may designate any one member in good standing of the American Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO, to represent him/her at the drawing.

Candidates' Articles

ELECTION COMMITTEE RULE: Three hundred (300) word articles  from candidates will be published in the July/August 2001 issue of The American Postal Worker. These articles must be received in the office of the Secretary-Treasurer by 4:00 pm on Friday, June 29, 2001. Articles should be typed and double-spaced. Any article which exceeds 300 words will be cut off at the 300-word limit.

ELECTION COMMITTEE RULE: Following are guidelines that will be used to count the number of words in candidate articles and prepare the articles for printing:

1. The Webster's II New College Unabridged Dictionary, Copyright © 1999, will be used for word verification.

2. Acronyms are counted as one word (e.g. APWU, COLA, COPA, USPS).

3. Words that cannot stand alone, or words with a prefix, are counted as one word (e.g. San Francisco, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, pre-arbitration).

4. An individual's name will be counted as one word.

5. Words hyphenated in the dictionary are counted as one word. Words not hyphenated in the dictionary are counted separately.

6. If the dictionary lists the word as two words or with a hyphen, then either is acceptable. It is then counted as either one word (if hyphenated) or two words (if not hyphenated).

7. Words in the dictionary that are listed as two words, are counted as two even though written as one word in the candidate's  article (e.g., work force).

8. A word hyphenated in the candidate's article, but listed as one word (no hyphen) in the dictionary is counted as one word.

9. If the title of a union position (or term) is hyphenated in the APWU National Constitution and Bylaws, it is counted as one word (e.g., Members-at-Large, Representative-at-Large, Secretary-Treasurer).

10. Abbreviations such as & (and), + (plus), % (per cent) are counted as one word even when the signs are used instead of the actual word.

11. Candidates should avoid submitting articles that contain typographical enhancements. Boldface type, bulleted or numbered lists, type set in all caps, underlined type, or extra punctuation are examples of typographical enhancements. All candidate articles must be equally presented when published so as not to draw more attention to one article over another.  Therefore, any typographical enhancements included in a candidate's article will be removed prior to publication.

12. It is important for the candidate to double-check his/her article for grammar and spelling errors prior to sending in the article. Such errors will not be corrected.

Inspection of Membership List

ELECTION COMMITTEE RULE: Each candidate personally, or another APWU member in good standing authorized by a candidate in writing, is entitled to inspect the membership list during the five-day period between 9:30 am on Monday, August 27, 2001 and 5:00 pm on Friday, August 31, 2001, upon a candidate sending to the national Secretary-Treasurer written notice of their intent to do so, along with the identity of the member who will be inspecting the membership list on behalf of the candidate. Said notice must be received by the APWU national Secretary-Treasurer by 4:00 pm on Thursday, August 16, 2001. NO PART OF ANY LIST MAY BE COPIED.

Voting

You will be eligible to vote in the APWU 2001 National Election of Officers if you were a member in good standing of the American Postal Workers Union as of Thursday, May 31, 2001.
