Teleconference Set

Arbitrator Steven Goldberg plans to issue his final decision in the APWU interest arbitration on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, and the APWU has scheduled a teleconference with local union officials on that day.Goldberg originally indicated his decision would be available on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, and the union had scheduled a teleconference for Friday, Dec. 14. The teleconference is now scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 18, beginning at 3 p.m. EST.

Locals interested in learning the details of the award should call (202) 842-4248 to receive the new telephone number to connect to the teleconference.Each teleconference is assigned a unique telephone number, so those who have participated in prior teleconferences must get a new number.The telephone number for the Tuesday, Dec. 18, conference will not be the number we were given when the teleconference was scheduled for Friday. Due to technical constraints, we can provide only one teleconference site per local.

It is important that those who wish to participate call prior to 3 p.m. EST so that they can hear the entire presentation.

A teleconference for Regional Coordinators and National Business Agents is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at 11 a.m. EST.Coordinators and NBA's should call (202) 842-4248 to get the telephone number for that teleconference as well.

Following the teleconference, the entire award will be placed on the APWU web site.

Ads Deadline Extended
Souvenir Journal for Moe Biller Dinner

The deadline to receive ads for the souvenir journal for the Moe Biller Lecture and Conference dinner has been extended from Dec. 12, 2001, to Jan. 4, 2002.

The Moe Biller Labor Issues Lecture and Conference, honoring the longtime APWU president, will be held Jan. 11-12 at the Washington Hilton Hotel and Towers. See News Service bulletin No. 32.

Dec. 24th Holiday
'Recognize Our Outstanding Contributions'

APWU President Bill Burrus has sent the letter below to Postmaster General Potter regarding the holiday President Bush designated for federal employees on Dec. 24th.The Postmaster General has refused to grant the holiday to postal workers, saying we are not federal employees.

Bush's Trade Bill Squeaks By
House Passes 'Fast Track' By One Vote!

On Dec. 6, 2001, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR3006,the Fast Track Trade bill, by a vote of 215-214.President Bush lobbied extensively for the bill, which organized labor opposed.

The Republican House leadership extended the time allotted for voting by more than 20 minutes to squeak by with a one-vote margin.When the original time for voting expired, the tally for the bill was 215-210, against.Only with added GOP pressure - threats, deals, promises of new benefits for laid-off workers and appeals to patriotism - did the vote total change.

The final tally was 194 Republicans and 21 Democrats voting yes on fast track and 189 Democrats, 23 Republicans and 2 Independents voting NO.
