National Officers Election Ballots Mailed to Members
APWU News Bulletin #14-2004, Sept. 9 , 2004 | PDF
Ballots for the 2004 Election of APWU National Officers will be mailed Monday, Sept. 13, to Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, by Merkle Direct Marketing. Each and every member in good standing as of June 15, 2004, will receive a ballot.
For a ballot to be valid for counting, it must be received by the APWU National Election Committee in the designated post office box in Washington, DC, no later than 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004.
If You Have Not Received a Ballot
A member in good standing who has not received a ballot by Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, should notify his/her local or the national union to request a duplicate ballot.
A member of a local should notify the treasurer or president of his/her local, who should call or fax the notice to the office of the national secretary-treasurer. Requests for duplicate ballots should include the name, Social Security number, division, and address of the member needing a duplicate ballot. The caller should provide his/her name, position, and local.
A member-at-large (MAL) should call or fax a request for a duplicate ballot directly to the office of the national secretary-treasurer. The MAL should provide his/her name, Social Security number, division, and address.
The telephone number for requesting duplicate ballots is 202-842-8505. The fax number is 202-216-2650. A duplicate ballot will be mailed on the next business day following notification to the office of the APWU national secretary-treasurer.
Counting the Votes
The APWU National Election Committee will pick up the ballots from the Washington post office box at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004.
Votes will be tallied at the Best Western Maryland Inn, 15101 Sweitzer Lane, Laurel, MD 20707. The hotel phone number is 301-776-5300.
As soon as they are available, unofficial election results will be released by the APWU national secretary-treasurer’s office on the APWU Web site, www.apwu.org.
Automated Tallying Process to Be Used
Ballot Secrecy Will Be Maintained at All Times
Votes in the 2004 Election of National Officers will be tallied using automated scanning machines, continuing a process that was first used in the 2001 APWU election. Thirty different ballots have been developed to enable APWU members to vote for union officers in the appropriate areas, regions, and races.
Members will vote for general officers, regional coordinators, division (craft) officers, national business agents, and retiree convention delegates. Unopposed candidates’ names and positions will not appear on the ballot. A list of uncontested races can be found in the June 28, 2004, News Bulletin, which can be seen online at www.apwu.org/news/nsb/index.htm.
Ballots will contain a seven-digit routing number that will enable the scanner to identify the version of the ballot being scanned and the local the ballot comes from. This will ensure that votes are tabulated for the correct races in the appropriate region and division.
Nothing on the ballot will identify any individual APWU member. The sanctity of the secret ballot will be maintained at all times.
