Final Deliberations of the 2006 Convention

APWU 18th Biennial Convention News Bulletin #5, Aug. 21, 2006

On the final day of the APWU 18th Biennial Convention, delegates approved a resolution outlining the union’s priorities for contract negotiations. They include:

  • Maintaining job security — including extending no-layoff provisions; protection against the negative effects of consolidation, and continuing efforts to eliminate contracting out;

  • Winning real wage increases and protecting benefits – including winning fair wage increases, maintaining cost-of-living raises, winning salary upgrades, and protecting existing health benefits and retirement programs; (Many resolutions for upgrades of positions were presented, and all were approved by delegates.)

  • Establishing an all-career workforce — including the elimination of casuals and the conversion of Transitional Employees (TEs) at Remote Encoding Centers to career employees.

(In earlier convention action, delegates approved a resolution urging the union’s national leaders to “pursue all options available” to resolve craft jurisdictional disputes.)

In other convention action, delegates amended two resolutions of the Formal Resolutions Committee: Delegates approved the addition of the word “legal” to a resolution endorsing human rights for all and self-determination for immigrants. The final wording adopted by the convention calls for the APWU to “recognize and support human and civil rights for all people and self-determination for legal immigrants.”

A resolution opposing the War in Iraq was amended to call for the withdrawal of U.S. troops by March 2007.

Conventioneers also adopted the recommendations of numerous committees, including Appeals, Legislative, Clerk, Maintenance, Motor Vehicle, and Safety and Health.
