OIG Asks: Should the Postal Service Continue Its Consolidation Plan?

Web News Article #:
160-2014

08/29/2014 - The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is conducting a poll on its ‘Pushing the Envelope’ blog to determine whether it should advocate for or against the Postal Service’s plan to resume consolidation and closure of up to 82 mail processing plants. In early 2014, the USPS had announced it was halting all scheduled consolidations and closures. However, in an announcement on June 30, the USPS said it would resume in January 2015.

APWU has vowed to fight back against plant closures and consolidations. “This is a direct assault on service to the people of the country, on postal workers and on the Postal Service’s own network,” said union President Mark Dimondstein. The closure of the plants will require the USPS to degrade service standards and delay mail.

“We need a Postmaster General who will champion the Postal Service. Instead, PMG Donahoe is on a rampage to destroy it,” he said.

Take a moment to vote in the poll and leave a comment telling the OIG why the Postal Service’s plan to resume closures and consolidations is a bad idea.
