10/22/2018 - On October 16, APWU members and retirees, our sister postal unions, community leaders and allies filled the Hunts Point Post Office in the Bronx, NY to deliver a petition of more than 5,300 signatures to Bronx Postmaster Scott Farrar, calling for expanded financial services at the Bronx post office and nationwide. “Postal Banking brings a service to the people that’s not only important to the community of the Bronx,” said Jonathan Smith, New York Metro Postal Union President, “but it’s important to this nation”.
An astounding 52.3 percent of Bronx households are underserved by traditional Wall Street banks. These residents either have no bank account or have an account and use “alternative” financial services including paycheck cashing and pawn shops.
The Campaign for Postal Banking invited Postmaster Farrar to accept the petitions. He declined to attend the event. Rep. Serrano agreed to deliver the petitions and the letter of Congressional support to Postmaster Megan Brennan.
10/20/2018 - APWU President Mark Dimondstein has announced that the union and the Postal Service again agreed to extend negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement for an additional 30 days until November 20, 2018.
10/19/2018 - Under Articles 17 and 31 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, management has the obligation to provide documentation when the union has requested it for the enforcement, administration, or interpretation of the contract. This includes information necessary to determine whether or not to file or to continue the processing of a grievance.
In a January 2010 letter, current Vice-President of Labor-Relations, Doug Tulino, wrote the following to all managers and supervisors:
Responding to Information Requests
When you receive a request for information from a union representative, you must act promptly after receiving the request. There is no specific statutory time target, but a good rule of thumb for routine requests is to respond within five days of receiving the request. Do not wait until you have all the information if some information can be supplied quickly, but other information will take much longer to provide. If you need assistance in responding to a request, immediately contact District Labor Relations for help. Do not ignore requests or assume that you can wait a week or tow to work on the request before responding.
If management does not provide the requested information, one tool you have at your disposal is to file charges against the Postal Service through the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
10/18/2018 - The previously announced payroll issue caused by a faulty computer program and affected 88,782 APWU represented bargaining unit employees in the Clerk, Maintenance, Motor Vehicle Service and Support Services crafts.
The Postal Service has informed the APWU that management will begin to do manual pay adjustments beginning October 18, 2018, starting with the employees who are missing the most pay. Management’s goal is to have the majority of the pay adjustments done in time to be included on the next pay check – dated November 2, 2018 – with the remainder being completed by the November 16, 2018 pay date. However, there is no guarantee that will be accomplished.
10/16/2018 - This morning the APWU became aware that the Postal Service identified a computer glitch with the payroll system that will affect nearly 90,000 APWU represented bargaining unit employees. The APWU immediately contacted the USPS about the issue and will continue to monitor the situation until it is corrected. The discrepancies in pay for employees is for pay period 21 2018 (September 29-October 12, 2018, pay date October 19, 2018). Employees should review their pay stubs for pay period 21 and verify if there is any missing pay.

10/11/2018 - On Sunday, October 7, the day before the National Day of Action, Eastern Region APWU members met with Andy Kim, Democratic Party candidate for the NJ-3rd Congressional District, and presented him with a COPA contribution.
Yesterday, Oct. 8, thousands of postal workers and supporters participated in over a hundred rallies across the country to proclaim that the U.S. Mail Is Not For Sale! This National Day of Action was sponsored jointly by the four postal unions.

10/04/2018 - Before members of the House of Representatives left for the October recess, a majority of them signed on as cosponsors of H. Res. 993, which expresses the need to keep the United States Postal Service an independent establishment of the federal government and should not be subject to privatization.
On July 16, a leading group of Congressional representatives took action to help combat a proposal to privatize the Postal Service by introducing House Resolution 993. The privatization proposal, put forward by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget in their report Delivering Government Solutions in the 21st Century, would “restructure the U.S. Postal Service” and “prepare it for future conversion from a government agency into a privately-held corporation.”
Thereafter, on Sept. 18, a bipartisan group of Senators introduced Senate Resolution 633, sponsored by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), stating that, “Congress should take all appropriate measures to ensure that the United States Postal Service remains an independent establishment of the Federal Government and is not subject to privatization.” By Sept. 25, S.Res.633 had 36 co-sponsors including, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Sen. Angus King, Jr. (I-ME), and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ).
