Labor Day Observances Monday, September 5
APWU Members Urged to Take Part

APWU Web News Article #36-05, Aug. 18, 2005

Many thousands of union members are preparing to observe Labor Day by participating in community events across the country and by joining a week of online activism to demand that America “Reward Work, Respect Workers.”

For decades, unions have led the struggle for social and economic justice. Now, however, many of the gains achieved — from overtime pay to pensions and family medical leave — are under attack from corporate interests and their anti-labor allies in Congress and the Bush Administration, according the AFL-CIO’s Web site.

“On Labor Day, we need to renew our commitment to fight for working families,” said APWU President William Burrus. “This year it is particularly important to speak out for good jobs, healthcare, retirement security, and workers’ rights. I urge every APWU member to participate in a Labor Day event.”

To learn about Labor Day observances in your area, contact your local officers or local labor council. For a Labor Day Tool Kit that will help you organize an event or to take action online, visit the AFL-CIO’s Labor Day 2005 Web page.
