Hurricane Katrina: Contact Information

APWU Web News Article #39d-05, Sept. 8, 2005

(09/08/05) As the first postal payday following the hurricane arrives, affected employees who do not have direct deposit are advised that they can pick up their paychecks at the Baton Rouge P&DC located at 8101 BlueBonnet Boulevard. Photo identification will be required.

Employees who are not in the area should telephone 225-763-3650 to make arrangements to have their checks forwarded to them. Please note: Due to the hurricane, service on this phone line is spotty.

The pay of employees who use direct deposit will not be interrupted, if the deposits are assigned to a financial institution that is not solely locally operated.

Employees who do not have direct deposit but wish to establish it, can do so via PostalEASE. The routing number for Hibernia National Bank is 065000090; for Whitney National Bank it is 065000171.

Contact Information

Postal workers from areas affected by Hurricane Katrina are being asked to contact the USPS or APWU.

Employees may contact the USPS at 1-877-477-3273 (TTY: 1-866-833-8777). APWU members may call the Southern Region office at 281-447-5103. Postal and union officials are trying to establish the whereabouts of employees and to determine the level of emergency need.

The USPS phone number will connect employees to PostalEASE. Callers will hear, “If you are an employee in a work location that is closed due to Hurricane Katrina, press 1.” Employees who press #1 will be transferred to a call center, where an attendant will gather contact information.

Employees can also use this phone number to report their inability to work.

A special phone number has been established for employees affected by the hurricane to learn the status of their facility and, if the facility is open, to find out where and when to report to work. The number is: 1-888-363-7462. (Employees will have to provide the first three digits of their office zip code.)

Administrative leave continues in some locations until further notice. Employees in facilities where service has been curtailed do not have to report to work. Workers are advised to continue to check on the status of their work location by calling 1-888-363-7462.

The USPS has asked employees that have established temporary residences to complete change-of-address cards.

Help

Victims who are currently in the Houston District should call the USPS at 713-226-3801 if they are in need of assistance. In the San Antonio area, call 210-271-0853; in Dallas, call 214-631-3162.

“We are deeply saddened by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina,” said APWU President William Burrus. “We mourn the tragic loss of life and the deprivation so many are suffering.”

“APWU members – and locals – are encouraged to help their fellow workers who have suffered tremendous losses by contributing to the Postal Employees' Relief Fund.”

The fund is a charitable organization established by postal unions and the USPS, which benefits active and retired postal employees who incur a significant loss in property damage as the result of a major natural disaster.

Contributions can be made to the Postal Employees' Relief Fund and sent to PERF, PO Box 34422, Washington, DC 20043-4422, or they can be sent in care of the APWU, Att: PERF, 1300 L Street NW, Washington DC 20005.

People in need of immediate relief should contact www.fema.gov, or call 1-800-621-3362.
