They were chosen from a group of 80 Retail Sales Associates — who were nominated by their local union or managers — to participate in the publicity campaign. The 80 traveled to Dallas in late August, where they learned how to “champion the benefits of upgrading the lobby environment.”
The entire group will take part in marketing USPS products and services, with the finalists playing the largest role.
The participation of clerks is due in part to APWU efforts in 2004 when the “Postal Ambassador” program was initially announced.
“When the program was brought to my attention, I saw that it spotlighted only letter carriers,” said APWU President William Burrus. “Our members perform the widest range of essential services in the nation’s mail system, and I demanded and received assurances that we would be included in the campaign.”
After an agreement was reached with postal management earlier this summer, APWU local unions in each District nominated five retail sales associates; District management nominated an additional five.
After the training, the 80 finalists [photos below] spent a day in Dallas “auditioning” for the Area representative positions. The following APWU members were among the nine selected as “Postal Ambassadors.”
