Despite Majority Support, ‘EFCA’ Blocked in Senate

06/28/2007 - Although a majority of U.S. Senators clearly favor the Employee Free Choice Act, anti-worker lawmakers have prevented the Senate from passing the measure.

Fifty-one senators voted June 26 to end debate and pass the act. But the 48 senators who oppose the bill voted against “cloture,” preventing a vote on the bill. Under Senate rules, 60 senators would have had to agree to end debate before a vote on the legislation could take place.

Banks Pulls Misleading Ad From Airwaves

06/27/2007 - The Wachovia Bank Corp. has stopped airing a television commercial that strongly implied that home delivery of mail is a primary cause of identity theft.

On June 18, G. Kennedy Thompson, the bank’s CEO, responded to a letter from APWU President William Burrus that objected to the commercial’s characterization. Thompson said that the ad, also criticized by Postmaster General John E. Potter, had been pulled from the airwaves.

The leader of an international union federation met with APWU President William Burrus on June 25, 2007, as part of a visit to the United States.

Philip Jennings, general-secretary of the Switzerland-based Union Network International (UNI), and Burrus discussed how the labor movement should respond to globalization, the trend by corporations and businesses to expand around the globe.

Public Affairs Group Honors APWU TV Ad

06/25/2007 - An APWU-sponsored TV commercial that decried the negative effects of Postal Service consolidation plans has won a “Pollie Award” from the American Association of Political Consultants.

Broadcast in select cities in the last half of 2006, the 30-second TV commercial — running in conjunction with radio ads — informed citizens and community leaders about the Postal Service’s network realignment proposals.

Ballot Placement Set, Candidates Certified for Election of APWU National Officers

06/22/2007 - Secretary-Treasurer Terry Stapleton has certified the following union members as candidates for election to national office by referendum balloting, as mandated by the APWU Constitution and Bylaws.

A drawing to determine the order candidates’ names will appear on the ballot was held on Friday, June 22, 2007, at 10 a.m. Incumbent officers are listed first, and are denoted by (I) appearing after their name.

Secretary-Treasurer Stapleton cast one vote for the candidates in the uncontested races and the National Election Committee declared them elected, in accordance with the Constitution. Their names will not appear on the ballot.

06/21/2007 - The official 2006-2010 Collective Bargaining Agreement between the USPS and the APWU is being printed and will be ready for shipping shortly, the union has announced. Copies can be viewed and downloaded from the APWU Web site, and orders for printed copies may be placed online or by phone.
