Dock Workers Dies Following Accident at Work
APWU Web News Article #33-06, June 5, 2006
APWU member Antoine Thomas died June 1 after he was apparently hit by a truck while working in the dock area of the Chicago Bulk Mail Center. According to published reports, his body was discovered on the ground by a co-worker, and police were called at approximately 10 p.m. He was declared dead at 10:25 p.m., at the Loyola University Medical Center.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident,” said APWU President William Burrus. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Brother Thomas’ family and to his co-workers.”
Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials are investigating the accident, and police are looking for the driver of the truck, who may not have realized he struck anyone.
“The APWU will continue to work to ensure that the safest conditions prevail at postal facilities across the nation,” Burrus said. “Employees should never work alone on the docks.”
According to television news reports of the incident, the accident occurred at the back of the facility, in an area that is not open to the public.
Thomas, 43, was a dock clerk who began his career with the Postal Service on July 23, 1994.
