Goleta Victims' Funds to Be Distributed

APWU Web News Article #34-06, June 14, 2006

APWU Human Relations Director Sue Carney has announced that in the first week of July the union will distribute contributions to the union’s fund for victims of the Goleta, CA, shooting. “We appreciate the generosity of APWU members who have made donations to the families of their co-workers,” Carney said. Approximately $25,000 has been collected to date.

The money will be distributed to the families of five APWU members who were gunned down at the Santa Barbara Processing & Distribution Facility on Jan. 30. The shooter was a deranged former P&DF employee who had not worked at the facility since 2003.

Contributions must be received by June 28, so that the distribution can be made, Carney said. Donations can be made by check or money order and mailed to:

One hundred percent of the donations will be distributed to the immediate families of the slain APWU members. The $25,000 fund includes a $10,000 contribution from the national union. The APWU also contributed $10,000 to the Goleta Plant Memorial Fund, which made donations to USPS victims of the shooting.

“We encourage APWU members to contribute to the APWU Memorial Fund,” said union President William Burrus, “and to continue to give prayers and other support to the victims’ families and to the postal workers who have suffered.”

The APWU members who died were Charlotte Colton, 44; Ze Fairchild, 37; Nicola Grant, 42; Dexter Shannon, 58; and Guadalupe Swartz, 52.
