USPS Demands Cuts in Pay, Benefits, Job Security

05/28/2015 - Contract negotiations between the American Postal Workers Union and the U.S. Postal Service ended without an agreement on May 27.

The USPS scuttled any prospect of reaching a deal by insisting on severe cuts in pay and benefits, despite the fact that progress had been made on many non-economic issues, President Mark Dimondstein reported. “Management’s economic demands and proposed changes to the workforce structure were completely unacceptable,” he said.

What Can Union Members Do?

05/28/2015 - “Our fight for a good contract now enters a new stage, but the role of rank-and-file union members remains critical,” President Dimondstein said. “Your continued involvement can make a difference as we move to mediation and possibly to arbitration,” he declared. “Postal management takes note of how many of our members are wearing union buttons, stickers and T-shirts, and how many union members participate in rallies and other activities. They take it as a sign of the union’s strength,” he said.

The union and management had agreed to extend the current labor contract, which expired on May 20, for a one-week period that ended at midnight.

OIG Report Paints Bright Future for Postal Banking

05/21/2015 - report by the USPS Office of Inspector General (OIG) released May 21 outlines the next steps for implementing postal banking, in which post offices would offer basic financial services – providing affordable banking transactions to every zip code in the US, while strengthening the Postal Service.

The May 21 report titled, “The Road Ahead for Postal Financial Services,” states that expanding and enhancing existing financial services such as money orders, international money transfers, check cashing and bill payments could be accomplished without an act of Congress.

Contract Talks Extended One Week to Focus on Economic Package

Provisions of Old Agreement to Continue

05/21/2015 - The APWU and the U.S. Postal Service agreed to continue bargaining for an additional week after they were unable to reach agreement on economic issues by the May 20 expiration of the current contract. “We were unable to reach a negotiated settlement tonight,” Dimondstein said just before midnight. “We were too far apart on wages and benefits. But we are going to work hard over the course of the next week to see if we can narrow the differences." 

“The terms of the 2010-2015 Collective Bargaining Agreement will continue until a new contract is reached,” he said.  “In the meantime, all the old contractual protections remain in full force and effect.”
