APWU Serves Homeless Vets
At Winterhaven Stand Down
APWU Web News Article 002-2012, Feb. 1, 2012
The APWU participated in the Veterans’ Administration annual Winterhaven Stand Down on Jan. 21. More than 500 homeless and underserved veterans were bused to the event to receive a variety of social services and necessities.
Thanks to the generous donations made by many APWU members, locals and state organizations, the APWU was able to give each veteran a new backpack filled with nonperishable food, warm clothing, toiletries and survival gear to help them get through their cold days and bitter nights.
This was the fifth consecutive year the APWU participated in the event. Eric K. Shinseki, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs stopped by the APWU booth, to thank the union for a job well done.
The Human Relations Department sent a letter to all APWU local and state organizations requesting a nominal donation of fifty-cents per member to help facilitate APWU Support Our Troops and Veterans programs for the 2012 calendar year. March 31st is the deadline for planning purposes, but donations will graciously be accepted throughout the year.
