On the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act:

The Fight for the Right to Vote Rages On

08/04/2015 - On Aug. 6, the APWU will join with others across the country to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, and rededicate ourselves to the fight to protect the right to vote. 

APWU President Mark Dimondstein is urging locals and state organizations to participate in a National Day of Action on Aug. 6 to commemorate the historic occasion and to highlight the need to restore the voting rights of our nation’s citizens.  Locals are being asked to post notices on their websites, Facebook and Twitter, send messages to their email lists, and encourage union members to spread the word. Samples were provided by Democracy Initiative, which is organizing the observance of the anniversary.

The horns were honking in front of the Hazel Park [MI] Post Office on July 31, as motorists showed their support for Good Postal Service! Good Jobs! Good Contract! 

Members of the 480-481 Area Local held an informational picket and march, starting at Felker Field and ending at the post office.

Were You Affected by OPM’s Data Breach?

08/03/2015 - Retirees who are unsure about whether they were affected by the OPM data breach involving names, birth dates, addresses, and Social Security numbers can call 844-777-2743 to find out, reports APWU Retirees Department Director Judy Beard. An advisor will assist with inquiries and can help those who were affected enroll in the identity theft monitoring program offered by OPM.

It’s Time to Schedule a Meeting over August Recess

A growing number of U.S. Representatives are expressing their opposition to the Postal Service’s mail slowdown by co-sponsoring H.Res.54 (House Resolution 54). This nonbinding resolution, introduced by Rep. David McKinley (R-WV) and Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY), calls on the Postal Service to reverse the January 5 action and restore service standards to those in effect from July 1, 2012 – January 4, 2015.

In Honor of Medicare’s 50th Anniversary, Alliance Members Hold Celebrations Nationwide

07/31/2015 - Retirees and allies around the country participated in more than 100 Medicare events celebrating 50 years of guaranteed health coverage for seniors this week. In Washington, DC, the Alliance for Retired Americans participated in a celebratory press conference with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (CA) and Reps. Doris Matsui (CA), Jan Schakowsky (IL), Xavier Becerra (CA), and Joe Crowley (NY) to honor the program’s accomplishments and reiterate support for preserving it for the future. Alliance executive director Richard Fiesta and Alliance member Susan Thomas of Maryland spoke at the event. You can watch the video on YouTube. Minutes later, U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (NV) led a Senate celebration.

Happy 50th Birthday, Medicare!

At 87 events in 37 states on July 30, unions, seniors, medical professionals and others held special celebrations in honor of Medicare’s 50th birthday.

“Today’s 50th anniversary of Medicare is not just a moment, it is a movement. We need to protect, improve and expand Medicare,” said APWU Retirees Director Judy Beard at the rally in Washington, DC.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was the only presidential candidate to attend the event, which was sponsored by National Nurses United.
