Alliance Joins House Members to Protect Social Security Disability Insurance

02/27/2015 - On Wednesday, the Alliance joined Democratic Representatives Xavier Becerra (CA), Sander Levin (MI), Jan Schakowsky (IL), and Doris Matsui (CA), and allies in speaking out on a tele-press conference call focused on protecting Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), which has come under attack by House Republicans since the new Congress convened. The call came in conjunction with a hearing by the House Ways and Means Committee.

Just days ago, Governor Scott Walker stated he would sign such legislation if it reaches his desk, a stark reversal from his campaign promise not to support right to work legislation – a move Politifact calls a full Flip-Flop.

Congressional Support Grows for Prompt, Reliable Mail

USPS Should Nix Mail Delays, Say Reps

02/23/2015 - The bipartisan coalition of lawmakers saying “No” to delayed mail is growing by the day.  Since the end of January, 46 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed on as co-sponsors of House Resolution 54 (H.Res.54).  The resolution, introduced by Rep. David McKinley (R-WV) and Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY), calls on the Postal Service to “take all appropriate measures to restore service standards in effect as of July 1, 2012."

Alliance Members Visit Over 120 Congressional Offices during Lobby Week

02/20/2015 - Members of the Alliance visited over 120 Members of Congress and staff in their home states this week during the Presidents Day recess.

“Under the new 114th Congress, retirees issues are once again under attack from many directions including proposed trade agreements, Social Security and Medicare,” said Richard Fiesta, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans. “I applaud all of the Alliance members who are taking their concerns directly to their Representatives.”

Contract Negotiations Begin

At Opening Session, Union Breaks with Tradition

02/19/2015 - Contract negotiations between the American Postal Workers Union and the U.S. Postal Service got underway on Feb. 19 with a dramatic break with tradition. Joining the APWU at the opening session were actor-activist Danny Glover and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, who made brief remarks following a statement by APWU President Mark Dimondstein. National Association of Letter Carriers President Fredric Rolando joined APWU negotiators at the bargaining table as well.
