Excitement Builds as National Convention Nears

07/11/2014 - As the start of the APWU 22nd Biennial Convention nears, anticipation for the big event is building. As of the second week in July, more than 2,000 delegates representing more than 300 locals and state organizations had registered. This year’s theme, Standing Up – Fighting Back! reflects the union’s new activism and the convention will as well. In addition to the traditional convention events, featured guest speakers scheduled to address delegates include Danny Glover, Ed Schultz, Rev. William Barber, Jim Hightower and Richard Trumka.

Maintenance Craft Settles Dispute on Custodial Staffing; Will Convert More Than 3,150 PSEs

07/11/2014 - The APWU and USPS signed a major settlement July 9 that resolves a long-standing dispute over custodial staffing and results in the conversion to career of all Maintenance Craft Postal Support Employees, Maintenance Craft Director Steve Raymer has announced.

July 11, 2014 - On June 30, the Postal Service announced plans to resume the closure and consolidation of up to 82 mail processing plants beginning in January 2015.  The APWU was quick to denounce USPS’s destructive scheme.  “This is a direct assault on service to the people of the country, on postal workers and on the Postal Service’s own network,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein.

07/09/2014 - “A Postal Service letter to the APWU dated July 7 indicating that it is terminating the no-bid deal with Staples and replacing it with an ‘approved shipper’ program is a ruse,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “The USPS is changing the name of the program, without addressing the fundamental concerns of postal workers and postal customers. Send a Postcard to Staples CEO

07/09/2014 - With momentum building for the ‘Don’t Buy Staples’ campaign, the APWU wants to make sure Staples CEO Ronald Sargent gets the message.

The union is asking supporters to sign a postcard addressed to Staples CEO Ronald L. Sargent, telling him that until his stores staff their postal counters with USPS employees, they will take their business elsewhere.

AFSCME, UNITE HERE Join ‘Don’t Buy Staples’ Movement ’

07/07/2014 - The ‘Don’t Buy Staples’ campaign got another big boost on July 2, when the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) endorsed the boycott.

“We are asking our members, friends, family members and colleagues to take their business elsewhere,” AFSCME President Lee Saunders and Secretary-Treasurer Laura Reyes wrote to Staples CEO Ronald L. Sargent. AFSCME represents 1.6 million active and retired public-sector workers.
