2017 APWU Scholarship Deadline Extended

03/29/2017 - The deadline for the submission of applications for the E.C. Hallbeck academic scholarship ($8,000 over a four-year period) and vocational scholarship ($3,000 over a three-year period) has been extended to May 31, 2017, APWU Secretary-Treasurer Liz Powell has announced.

Postal Regulatory Rate System Review Underway

APWU Weighs In, Calling for an End to CPI Price Cap

03/25/2017 - The American Postal Workers Union (APWU) submitted comments before the March 20 deadline to the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) for their ongoing “10 Year Rate System Review,” required by Congress in the 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (PAEA). The Commission is reviewing the effects of the current rate system, capped by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), to see how it impacts the Postal Service's ability to meet the objectives stated in the PAEA. The PRC requested comments from stakeholders, including the public, about the Postal Service’s rate setting system.

Central & Western Regions

Union Administration Training for the Central & Western Regions will take place from July 16 through July 22, 2017 at the Westin Southfield Detroit Hotel in Southfield, MI.

Motor Vehicle Service PSE Salary Exception Agreement Reached

03/23/2017 - On March 10, the Union signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Postal Service that remedies the situation where Motor Vehicle Service Postal Support Employees (PSE) who had been granted a salary exception were converted to career status within the same craft but to a lower level and received a starting salary rate in accordance with the June 6, 2014 MOU “Re: Resolution of Postal Support Employee (PSE) Salary Exception Issues,”  and its April 3, 2015 addendum.

The National President Conference of APWU State and Local presidents, gathered in Washington DC for one of its periodic meetings. This time for their conference the State and Local Presidents and other APWU officers, members and their families descended on Capitol Hill, meeting with elected officials to discuss the Postal Service Reform Act of 2017 and other issues of importance to postal workers.

APWU Members Join UAW’s ‘March on Mississippi’

Over two dozen APWU members came from 
multiple states to support the Nissan workers efforts to organize. 

APWU members stood in solidarity at the “March on Mississippi” with Nissan workers attempting to organize a union and join the United Auto Workers (UAW).

Over five thousand union brothers and sisters protested near the Nissan plant in Canton, MS, in support of the plant’s workers fighting to organize the notoriously anti-union plant. After the rally, workers marched two miles to the plant. They delivered a letter to Nissan demanding the right to vote for union representation and for a contract to address wages, require safer working conditions and improve job security – free of fear or intimidation.

Final Payment of 1.6.b Global Settlement Remedy Agreement

03/09/2017 - The Postal Service is distributing the final payment of the 1.6.b Global Settlement to over 13,000 active employees and retirees this week.  The payment is part of the remedy agreed upon in the Global Settlement reached between the APWU and the USPS on December 5, 2014. 

The terms of the settlement include a monetary remedy of $56 million to be distributed to eligible individual. The bulk of the payment was distributed in the first round.  The second and final round is therefore a smaller amount representing approximately 20% of the total payment...

MTESC Workers Unanimously Ratify First Contract

03/09/2017 - New APWU members at the Mail Transport Equipment Service Center (MTESC) in Urbandale, IA, unanimously ratified an initial two-year contract... The contract will increase job security through the implementation of a grievance process, a guaranteed number of full-time employees and a “no-lay-off” clause. The APWU also secured enhanced safety commitments from the company with improved pay and better benefits.
