Student Financial Aid Programs

As the cost of a college education continues to escalate, many parents do not have the funds or resources needed to assure their children receive a college education. However, there are numerous student aid programs available at the state and federal levels. For assistance contact the financial aid offices of colleges for information on the types of aid offered, the procedures, deadlines, and how and when the student will receive the aid. Inquire about each school’s satisfactory academic progress policy. Keep copies of the enrollment agreement, the school’s catalog, and all financial aid documents.

One of the overwhelming responsibilities of all officers, shop stewards and representatives of the union is to ensure it holds its money and property solely for the benefit of the union and its members. When union officials express an interest in leadership positions, they inherit the responsibilities entrusted to them, which includes maintaining a financially sound local...Make sure you mark your calendar for any of the 2019 national training seminars the Secretary-Treasurer's department will be scheduling. In addition to the scheduled training opportunities, local unions can also schedule training webinars. Two New Pre-Convention Workshops Added

07/05/2018 - The Research & Education Department sponsor's the APWU’s 16th Educational Conference, a National Convention event that provides union members with a wealth of information to take home to their local and state organizations. Recently, they have added two additional workshops to the 2018 pre-convention training!

1. New APWU SEARCH Interface Training Arbitration Advocates should attend this training. The new webbased database is designed to be used by arbitration advocates to simplify searches for arbitration awards and decisions. The company that maintains APWU SEARCH database has developed this new design to enable the system to function more efficiently. The training will include how the new interface works, how to conduct searches using the multiple-tab feature, and methods to narrow searches.  (10 am-1 pm)

2. “The APWU Health Plan" as an Organizing Tool - Teaches techniques and strategies for signing up non-members utilizing the APWU Health Plan and other benefit programs that are reserved for members. Explores ways to get members, who have quit, to rejoin the union. (10 am-1 pm)

03/27/2018 - The Research & Education Department will sponsor the APWU’s 16th Educational Conference, a National Convention event that provides union members with a wealth of information to take home to their local and state organizations. Twenty-eight workshops will be offered on Friday, Aug. 17... All APWU members are welcome and encouraged to sign-up online by the early registration deadline of Friday, Aug. 3. This deadline is firm for participants with special needs: If you need a sign interpreter, for example, you must register by Aug. 3. Other participants may try to sign up for workshops after they arrive in Pittsburgh; however, late registrants will have a limited choice of workshops and will not receive certificates.

Arbitration Advocacy Training Kicks Off

03/22/2018 - The APWU Arbitration Advocacy Training program will be Sunday, June 3 - Sunday, June 10. It is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of the techniques needed to effectively prepare a case for arbitration. Participants should plan to arrive at the hotel, Hilton Hotel & Meeting Center, 100 W Glenoaks Blvd, Glendale, CA 91202, on Sunday, June 3 because classes start promptly at 9:00 a.m. on Monday morning. A graduation dinner will be held on Saturday evening. No classes will be held on Sunday, June 10. The curriculum includes: Introduction to Arbitration; Preparing the Case; Identifying and Framing Issues; Threshold Issues; Exhibits and Stipulations; Opening and Closing Statements; Rules of Evidence; Objections, and Direct and Cross Examinations.

Fake News

During and after the 2016 Election, the term “fake news” became widely used in American political conversations. Politifact.com, a fact-checking website, defines fake news as, “made-up stuff, masterfully manipulated to look like credible journalistic reports that are easily spread online to large audiences willing to believe the fictions and spread the word.”

Protesting Health Care Bill 

Members of the Portland Oregon Area Local attended a rally protesting Republican health care legislation on July 6. At rallies all over the country, people protested against the drastic bill that would leave millions uninsured with the slogan, “Kill the bill, don’t kill us.”
