During the 24th Biennial National Convention and pre-convention meetings, The American PostalWorker spoke with some of the dozens of young members in attendance. We asked the new APWU leaders about their experiences as postal employees, APWU members and, if applicable, local representatives.

My dream would be to help make APWU truly a movement of members fighting to save the USPS from privatization. Everyone needs to take responsibility and get involved. There is plenty of work to do. It will only get better when everyone joins in making it happen. We all want a safe, non-hostile, good paying, enjoyable workplace! We all are under attack and without all of us in this fight we could lose everything.
09/21/2018 - APWU President Mark Dimondstein has announced that the union and the Postal Service have agreed to extend negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement for 30 days.
Our current union contract between the American Postal Workers Union and the United States Postal Service covers the wages, hours and working conditions of 200,000 postal workers. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement expired Thursday, September 20, 2018...
All the rights, benefits and provisions of our existing union contract remain in place, and are fully enforceable during the 30-day extension of negotiations.
08/23/2018 - On day 3 of the 24th Biennial National Convention, the delegates heard from American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) leaders about the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike. Many delegates found inspiration from the integral link between our past and present struggles, and from the crucial connection between the civil rights and labor movements.
08/21/2018 - On Tuesday afternoon, the highest governing body of the American Postal Workers Union hit the streets to protest against the possible sale of the U.S. Postal Service.
“This White House, the Heritage Foundation, and their billionaire backers, the Wall Street investors, they want their greedy hands on the public till and the public good – but they’ve started something that they’re not going to be able to stop,” said President Dimondstein. “They think this is their time…We’re going to show them this is truly our time.”
08/20/2018 - On Monday, Aug. 20, APWU National President Mark Dimondstein delivered the “State of the Union” address to the 2,038 delegates to the 24th Biennial National Convention. President Dimondstein addressed the successes of the past and struggles for the future. “I look forward to a spirited and productive week and am confident we will leave more united, inspired and dedicated to the cause of labor rights and dignity.”
08/19/2018 - On Aug. 19 and 20, APWU craft divisions – Clerk, Maintenance, Motor Vehicle Service, Support Services – and retirees held conferences. The ongoing contract negotiations was a topic on everyone’s mind.
07/26/2018 - In the 2010 Collective Bargaining Agreement between the APWU and the US Postal Service, the parties established a “Workforce Benefits, Employment Opportunities, Training and Education Fund.” The purpose of the fund was to provide for the Postal Service’s share of health insurance benefits to PSEs and to provide additional resources for new PSE benefits.

Update on Phase II Consolidations
As we move forward, I want to give an update about the work being done to save Phase 2 Plants from consolidation. Locals around the country are getting ready to stand up and that includes our members on the workroom floor. The last few months we have visited or met with local members providing strategy training for Augusta and Athens GA; Rocky Mount, Asheville and Fayetteville, NC; Florence, SC; Gainesville, Manasota and Mid-Florida FL; Stamford and North Haven CT; Central MA, Boston, Middlesex and Essex, MA; Bend and Eugene OR; Tacoma, Seattle and Wenatchee WA; Pocatello, ID; Mid-Hudson, NY; Fox Valley, IL; Industry, Redding, Eureka and North Bay CA; Grenada, Hattiesburg and Gulfport MS; North Alabama, AL; and Memphis and Chattanooga TN. By the time this magazine is in print we will have also provided training for Corpus Christi, Houston, Abilene and Beaumont TX; Rock Springs, WY; Provo, UT, and Tucson, AZ.
