Protesting Health Care Bill
Members of the Portland Oregon Area Local attended a rally protesting Republican health care legislation on July 6. At rallies all over the country, people protested against the drastic bill that would leave millions uninsured with the slogan, “Kill the bill, don’t kill us.”
08/18/2017 - Early registration for the All Craft Conference and the Retirees Conference has been extended until September 8, 2017. The cost is $85 for the All Craft Conference and $40 for the Retirees Conference. After September 8, 2017, the cost for the All Craft Conference is $135 and $45 for the Retirees Conference.
Featured is the graduating class of the Union Administration Training recently held at the Maritime Institute. The training was designed to give local and state presidents, executive vice presidents, and secretary-treasurers the skills needed to meet the upcoming challenges facing the labor movement. We all begin a new year with hopes for improvements on the past year. Even if the past year was a really great one, for instance, one in which the Cubs won the World Series. It is human nature to always want the next one to be better. This year, I think it is safe to say we are all waiting and watching what our new President-elect will do next.
12/14/2016 - The Secretary-Treasurer’s Department will be hosting an Officer’s Fiduciary Responsibility & QuickBooks Training in Atlanta, GA from March 9-11, 2017.
It will take place at the Westin Peachtree Plaza. Reservations can be made by calling the hotel directly at 1-800-937-8461 or on-line. The deadline for hotel reservations is Feb. 8, 2017. The hotel price is $148.00 per night plus taxes and fees.
04/19/2016 - The labor movement will observe Workers Memorial Day on Thursday, April 28, to commemorate those who have been killed or injured on the job and to revitalize the fight for workplace safety. The event coincides with the anniversary of the passage of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), which promises every worker the right to safe working conditions.
01/13/2016 - The Secretary Treasurer's office has scheduled a series of webinars on LM 2, LM 3, and LM 4 forms, which are annual financial reports required by the Department of Labor. Learn the essentials so you complete these forms properly.
12/03/2015 - The Research and Education Department will provide Arbitration Advocacy training to APWU arbitration advocates Feb. 28 to March 6, 2016. The program is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of the techniques needed to effectively prepare a case for arbitration.

The APWU has 875 chartered local and state unions in the U.S., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam, and each one of them has officers who are elected to be custodians of the union’s funds.
In most cases, prior to taking office, the officers have no prior accounting experience and have never managed organizational funds. The challenge for the Secretary-Treasurer’s Department is to provide training on their legal and constitutional obligations, and on best practices when administering union funds.
