05/07/2007 - Support for the Women’s Organizing Campaign is growing, with 89 locals and 17 state organizations participating, said Liz Powell, chairperson of the APWU subcommittee that is coordinating the drive.
Because of new interest in the campaign, the deadline for submitting membership applications for a special drawing has been extended until June 30. The contest offers a grand prize of a vacation trip for two; a second prize of $100 each for five entrants; and a third prize of $50 each for 10 entrants. In each case, the new member whose card is drawn and the APWU member who signed up the new member will be awarded prizes.
05/03/2007 - The Postal Service has notified the APWU that it will implement plans to shift some mail-processing operations from the St. Petersburg (FL) Processing and Distribution Center to the Tampa P&DC. Citing declining mail volume at the St. Petersburg facility, postal management claims the move will result in “significant savings” for the USPS.
“After review we have decided that this consolidation is in the best interest of the Postal Service,” said management’s April 26, 2007, letter. The USPS notified the union in December 2005 [PDF] that it would conduct a feasibility study of the proposed consolidation.
05/02/2007 - The APWU national election period has begun, and in approximately five months, on Oct. 5, the counting of ballots will commence.
The rules for the election of APWU national officers, as prepared by the 2007 APWU National Election Committee, appeared in the March/April issue of The American Postal Worker, with an update in the May/June edition. Other rules governing the conduct of union elections are promulgated by the Department of Labor.
04/25/2007 - The APWU has been notified that the consolidation of some mail-processing operations at the Twin Falls (ID) Customer Service Mail Processing Center into the Boise P&DC has been cancelled. On April 20, 2007, the USPS wrote, “After preliminary review, it has been determined not to pursue the consolidation of certain mail processing operations at the Twin Falls, ID CSMPC, at this time.” The Postal Service announced an Area Mail Processing Feasibility Survey in Twin Falls on Dec. 12, 2005, along with nine other studies.
04/18/2007 - On April 28 each year, the labor movement observes Workers Memorial Day to commemorate workers who have been killed or injured on the job, and to renew the fight for safety-and-health protections. This year’s theme is Good Jobs, Safe Jobs. It’s Time.
With union backing, Congress passed important legislation to establish job safety and heath standards for every industry more than three decades ago. In recent years, however, many of the safeguards we fought hard for have been eroded by lax enforcement.
04/13/2007 - The APWU received notice recently that consolidations of mail-processing operations in Watertown and Binghamton, NY, and Bloomington, IN, no longer are being considered, and that the Area Mail Processing study in the Bronx may be on hold.
“After preliminary review, it has been determined that there are currently no significant opportunities to improve efficiency or service through consolidation of mail processing operations" in Watertown and Binghamton, Postal Service management wrote in April 13 and April 17 letters. “Therefore, no changes will be made at this time.”
04/04/2007 - On Tuesday, April 24, 2007, working women across the country will mark Equal Pay Day — the day when women’s wages will finally catch up to what men earned in 2006.
“Women have come a long way, but are still waiting for equal pay,” said Dr. Heidi Hartmann, an economist at the Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR). “In fact, at the current rate of progress, equal pay will take another 50 years.”
Equal Pay Day presents an important opportunity to persuade women to join the APWU, said Liz Powell, Northeast Region Coordinator and chair of the union’s Women’s National Organizing Subcommittee. “The disparity in pay is a vivid reminder of why women must fight for equality. And, simply put, unions help women bridge the gap.”
03/30/2007 - One of the most important labor law reform measures in decades was introduced in the U.S. Senate March 29 — legislation that would give American workers greater freedom to make their own choices about joining unions and bargaining for better wages, benefits, and working conditions.
Sen. Edward Kennedy and 46 co-sponsors introduced the Employee Free Choice Act (S. 1041), a bill that would stiffen penalties for harassment, intimidation, and other illegal tactics employers often use to prevent workers from having a voice at work.
03/29/2007 - In a ceremony March 29, APWU President William Burrus and Postmaster General John E. Potter signed the 2006-2010 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Their signatures formalized the agreement, which was ratified by union members in January. The specific provisions of the agreement have been agreed to, and a permanent printed version is currently being proofread and finalized for printing. The union will post a notice when copies are available.
