05/19/2017 - The Postal Service and the Maintenance Division of the APWU signed an agreement resolving a national level dispute regarding custodial hours on line H of Form 4852 (case number Q15T-4Q-C 17274095). The issue in the case is “the determination of compliance with item 6 of the July 9, 2014 TL-5 MOU.”
The Postal Service filed this dispute to challenge the results in the field on the July 9, 2014 MS-47, T/L-5 agreement – in particular, item 6. The agreement continued a requirement for the Postal Service to properly staff the custodial workforce in facilities and to ensure that the custodians were performing the work that justified their staffing. When the work was not properly scheduled, a once-a-year review would take place. If the Postal Service was not properly assigning the custodians to their work, a payment at the overtime rate may be due.
The Bulk Mail Center (BMC) Conference was hosted by the APWU National and the Nation’s Capital Southern Maryland Area Local (WDC BMC) from April 30 through May 2, 2017. Ninety-two delegates attended, representing 18 of the 21 BMCs across the country.

The Lehigh Valley Processing & Distribution Center was issued a fine of nearly $100,000 by OSHA for extensive “willful” safety violations. OSHA found the $99,630 violation willful because the Postal Service failed in their “ongoing responsibility [to] ensure the adherence to the machine specific procedures to affect the necessary energy control for each system component.”

The new year certainly started with a bang! while we are, of course, very proud of the efforts of the Maintenance members involved, all the members of all American Postal Workers Union (APWU) bargaining units are deserving of praise and congratulations for a hard won success on the Staples issue. Everyone, regardless of craft, came together to press for what was right.

We all begin a new year with hopes for improvements on the past year. Even if the past year was a really great one, for instance, one in which the Cubs won the World Series. It is human nature to always want the next one to be better. This year, I think it is safe to say we are all waiting and watching what our new President-elect will do next.
11/22/2016 - Consistent with the requirements of the Wounded Warriors Federal Leave Act of 2015, the Postal Service allows veteran employees who meet the eligibility requirements to take Wounded Warrior Leave. This is a specific type of leave, which provides veteran employees with no loss in pay, for undergoing medical treatment for a service-related disability rated at 30% or more.

08/21/2016 - The new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) included a historic win for the Maintenance Craft.
“We have negotiated our way to an all-career workforce,” Maintenance Craft Director Steven G. Raymer, said at the National Convention. “There used to be casual employees, Transitional Employees, and there aren’t anymore. More recently, there used to be Postal Support Employees (PSEs) and there are no longer any PSEs that can be employed in the Maintenance Craft. We are very proud to be an all career workforce!”
07/23/2016 - According to information provided by the Postal Service, the new pay rates under the new APWU-USPS contract will begin on Aug. 6 (Pay Period 17) and will be reflected in paychecks dated Aug. 26, APWU President Mark Dimondstein has announced. Retroactive pay for the period from Nov. 14, 2015, through Aug. 5, 2016, are expected in Pay Period 22, with an expected pay date of Nov. 4, 2016.
