Final Payment for Retirees Regarding 1.6.b Global Settlement Remedy Agreement to be Distributed on April 21st

04/05/2017 - The Postal Service is distributing the final payment of the 1.6.b Global Settlement to retirees on April 21st. The payment is part of the remedy agreed upon in the Global Settlement reached between the APWU and the USPS on December 5, 2014. Eligible active employees have already received their final payment.

Final Payment of 1.6.b Global Settlement Remedy Agreement

03/09/2017 - The Postal Service is distributing the final payment of the 1.6.b Global Settlement to over 13,000 active employees and retirees this week.  The payment is part of the remedy agreed upon in the Global Settlement reached between the APWU and the USPS on December 5, 2014. 

The terms of the settlement include a monetary remedy of $56 million to be distributed to eligible individual. The bulk of the payment was distributed in the first round.  The second and final round is therefore a smaller amount representing approximately 20% of the total payment...

We Stopped Staples

After three years, the Stop Staples campaign concludes with a huge victory. By the time this issue of the American Postal Worker is in mailboxes, the USPS will be out of all Staples stores nationwide. Gone are the Postal Service counters and signs in Staples stores, put in to take away good paying postal retail jobs from the dedicated members of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU).

From time-to-time, the American Postal Worker interviews union leaders to learn why they got involved in the American Postal Workers Union. In this issue, we talk with Quanisha Mcneal, a 25-year-old member of the New York Metro Area Local. She started working at the post office in November 2014 as a clerk, and was appointed last year to be a part of the Young Workers Committee. As a Postal Support Employee (PSE) her experience represents over a quarter of the employees the APWU represents.

The Clerk Craft was successful in a recent arbitration regarding the USPS’s handling of the Sales Retention Team (SRT) program. The Postal Service blatantly violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in utilizing injured employees, mostly carriers, to staff the Sales Retention Teams, without first posting the jobs for bid in the Clerk Craft.

American Postal Workers Union Calls Off Staples Boycott

01/05/2017 - The U.S. Postal Service announced in a letter to the American Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO that the deal between the U.S. Postal Service and Staples has ended. Staples will be removing all signage and will discontinue postal services at the national retailer’s roughly 500 U.S. locations that handle postal services by the first week of March 2017. In response, APWU is calling off the boycott of Staples effective immediately and will notify its many supporters and allies.

The USPS and Staples Deal is Over!

JAN 5, 2017 - Postal management informed the APWU in writing that the “Approved Shipper” program in Staples stores will be shut down by the end of February 2017. This victory concludes the APWU’s three-year struggle. The boycott against Staples is over! 

“I salute and commend every member and supporter who made this victory possible,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein. “I never doubted that if we stayed the course, stuck together and kept the activist pressure on, we would win this fight.”

Recent Clerk Craft NBA Retirements

In 2016, three National Business Agents (NBAs) from the Clerk Division retired. “The APWU holds itself to the high standards that Sister Merow, Brother Taff and Brother Barron regularly met,” said President Dimondstein. “Together, they gave over 40 years of their lives serving the membership of this great union as National Business Agents. We wish them a healthy and happy retirement and welcome their successors.”
